William Thomas, a 24-year-old Huntington resident, was walking near Hoftra Drive in Greenlawn when, in the early hours of Thursday, May 4, an unknown driver struck him and fled the scene.

According to a GoFundMe set up to help cover his medical expenses, Thomas was rushed to the intensive care unit of Huntington Hospital, where he had to have surgery to reconnect his neck to his spine.
“God is so good and he is currently under sedation after a successful surgery,” wrote Delijah Harris, the organizer.
However, as of May 7, Thomas was “still sedated” and will need to undergo “intensive rehab.”
In the four days since the fundraiser was created, the community has raised more than $7,000 of the family’s $200,000 goal.
“ I wish people would understand the immense responsibility they are taking on every time they get in a car,” wrote donor Amber Siepel. “I hope you have a full recovery, William.”
In addition to the medical bill assistance, the family wants answers.
“If you have any information about the accident we ask that you contact the police,” Harris wrote to conclude her post. “Help us get #JUSTICE4WILL.”
